Breaking News: Federal Goverment To Impose Tax On Calls, SMS, MMS, Data and Satellite TV

The Federal Government has sent a bill to the National Assembly titled ‘Communication Service Tax Bill’ (CST) which seek to obtain a 9% from Nigerians on Calls, SMS, MMS, Data and Pay TV

If passed into law, Nigerians Wi brace up for tougher times as all telecom subscribers will be mandated to pay a compulsory 9% tax on all communication service translating into N20 billion monthly for the Federal Government according to subscriber data obtained from Nigerian Communications Commission.
Section 2 of the bill highlights that the chargeable services are voice calls, SMS, MMS, pay per view TV stations, data usage from telecommunication services providers and internet service providers.
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) will be responsible for the collection of the tax and its payment together with any interest and penalty into the Federation Account, while the Federal Government will be responsible for the administration and management of the funds.
The bill provides that all service providers are to file tax returns and pay the tax due not later than the last working day of the month immediately after the month to which the payment relates. Failure to comply with this provision will attract stiff financial penalties on erring entities.
Nigerians have called out the Federal Government on the proposed bill saying it shows how insensitive the Buhari-led government is to the plight of the masses.
