The Federal Government has sent a bill to the National Assembly titled
‘Communication Service Tax Bill’ (CST) which seek to obtain a 9% from
Nigerians on Calls, SMS, MMS, Data and Pay TV
If passed into law, Nigerians Wi brace up for tougher times as all
telecom subscribers will be mandated to pay a compulsory 9% tax on all
communication service translating into N20 billion monthly for the
Federal Government according to subscriber data obtained from Nigerian
Communications Commission.
Section 2 of the bill highlights that the chargeable services are
voice calls, SMS, MMS, pay per view TV stations, data usage from
telecommunication services providers and internet service providers.
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) will be responsible for the
collection of the tax and its payment together with any interest and
penalty into the Federation Account, while the Federal Government will
be responsible for the administration and management of the funds.
The bill provides that all service providers are to file tax returns
and pay the tax due not later than the last working day of the month
immediately after the month to which the payment relates. Failure to
comply with this provision will attract stiff financial penalties on
erring entities.
Nigerians have called out the Federal Government on the proposed bill
saying it shows how insensitive the Buhari-led government is to the
plight of the masses.
